“I went into What Tech Calls Thinking expecting a critique of Silicon Valley, but what I found was something more interesting: a book about the intellectual stories the tech industry tells about itself. Daub looks at the philosophers, writers, and ideas that Silicon Valley has adopted—often selectively—to explain and justify its worldview. From Nietzsche and Ayn Rand to Heidegger and other thinkers, the book examines how concepts about individualism, disruption, freedom, creativity, and technological progress get repackaged into startup culture. What I found most fascinating was the gap between actually engaging with a thinker and simply borrowing their vocabulary. Silicon Valley loves big philosophical ideas, but often strips them of their contradictions and complexity until they become motivational slogans for founders and investors. “Disruption,” “innovation,” and “changing the world” start sounding less like philosophical propositions and more like corporate mythology. The book also made me think differently about the way tech people talk about themselves. The mythology of the founder as a visionary outsider, the belief that technology inevitably moves society forward, and the assumption that existing institutions are obstacles rather than things worth understanding—all of these have intellectual histories. They didn’t appear out of nowhere. Daub asks an interesting question: What happens when complicated intellectual traditions become tools for an industry trying to explain its own power? My biggest takeaway: tech doesn’t just create products. It creates stories about what progress means—and those stories are worth examining just as carefully as the technology itself.”
