“Stolen Focus is a compelling look at why it has become so difficult to concentrate in the modern world. Johann Hari argues that our inability to focus isn’t simply a matter of weak willpower or individual discipline—it’s also shaped by the environments we live in, particularly technology, social media, information overload, and the constant pressure to switch our attention. What I found most interesting is the shift in perspective: instead of asking, “Why can’t I focus?”, Hari encourages us to ask, “What is happening to our attention?” He connects the personal experience of distraction to broader social and technological forces, while also exploring what helps people regain deeper attention—sleep, reading, boredom, meaningful work, and uninterrupted time. Some of the arguments can feel repetitive, and I think Hari occasionally stretches the evidence further than it can comfortably support. But the central idea stayed with me: attention is not just a personal resource; it is something that can be shaped, protected, and exploited. A particularly relevant book for anyone who feels like their ability to sit with one thing for an extended period has slowly disappeared. It made me want to spend less time optimizing my productivity and more time protecting the conditions that allow genuine focus to happen.”
