When the famous Dear Sugar column first dropped in 2011 I was 19 and had never had a big love or a big grief. Over the ensuing 15y and through several relationships this quote would continue to pop up uninvited in my mind and cause me to say "Am I gonna let a pop self-help author tell me what's 'real'"? and "What is FREELY, anyway"? and "Is anything really ABSOLUTE in this life"? Inconvenient though it is, can now confirm with 100% certainty that absolute rule means absolute rule. Ignore at your peril.

Recently, Cheryl’s husband died. It was an aggressive brain disease. It was sudden and deeply impacted his community. He was a dear friend so I was at his funeral. As you might imagine, Cheryl’s eulogy was a heartfelt tumble into the true glory and grit of a love lived and lost. She took all the time and space she needed to say all of the things she carefully wrote in her very raw and immediate grief. I can confirm, without question, that Cheryl Strayed channels truth into language for the rest of us to hold dear.
