Drawing your own calendar
•••
At the beginning of every month I draw my calendar from scratch. Something about it helps me really internalize time, the number of days, where all my plans fall within it, how busy I will be and how much free time I have to play with. I understand you could get this from filling out a pre made calendar but something about creating the lines, choosing the size of your days, writing out the numbers, is so meditative. To the chagrin of the people in my life I am time blind, and something about this helps.

Hell Gate Podcast
•••
Worker-owned local NYC news organization comprised of talented, smart, and witty journalists with good taste in events and food, and a rare ability to balance openly sharing political perspectives with fair and balanced coverage. The podcast is the encapsulation of all that, keeping me informed as I make breakfast without bumming me out. Given the international waves Zohran has been making, I think it might be interesting for non-NYers as well. I’m a subscriber, it feels so worth while!

Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin
•••
One of the best books ever written. And short! Honorable mention for The Hours by Michael Cunningham — so perfect its perfection is almost a flaw.

Bean bag lap desk
•••
I had one in high school that my mom stole when I moved out, and she has used it ever since (ftr that’s about 15 years). I only just got my own and I genuinely use it multiple times a day: to read in bed, to work from an arm chair, to eat dinner on the couch. I got the green one below from Target and I’m sure there are much nicer ones but I do like the color.

Go to a concert of an artist you love and sing along at the top of your lungs
•••
The most life affirming moments I have are at a show where I am surrounded by hundreds of strangers singing the same lyrics as me, words that mean something different but profound to us all. Jump in the same rhythm of the crowd, exchange meaningful looks and words with strangers, cry openly while dancing. If you don’t have a band you love that’s touring soon, find a great song by a band that is touring, then get to know their whole work, listen as you commute, run, dance in your house. Then when you get to the show let it all go. I heard someone say once “I used to be an Evangelical but then I realized I just liked live music.” No shade to faith but you can get that God high outside of the temple too, with some great beats and some good words.
