Cool Culture Family Pass (NYC)

NYC families can get a Cool Culture card through their child’s public school and the pass grants free general admission to 90 participating cultural institutions (up to five tickets, whether or not the child is present). I haven’t visited museums this frequently (or casually) since I was a college student.

The location has shifted a few times over the past twenty years but the quality of these Japanese confections remains unchanged. The 5th Avenue location is as much an art gallery as a sweet shop, and you can expect the loveliest packaging.

Drawing Nights @ The Figure Assembly

Illustrator Julia Rothman and filmmaker Oliver Lucks have transformed their Gowanus studio into a community hub that hosts a regular line-up of drawing events (from traditional figure drawing to speed portrait nights - similar to speed dating - to their “Seen Here” series, in which unusual subjects are interviewed and illustrated by the audience as they practice their craft).

Giant Sequoia Tree | American Museum of Natural History

In a museum filled with treasures, this nine-ton sequoia cross-section, which displays 1,342 annual rings, is probably my all-time favorite. Epic, humbling. It never fails to move me!

Rubin Museum Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room

I miss the Rubin Museum, but am thrilled that the Brooklyn Museum now hosts its famed shrine room. The installation is comprised of 100 artworks and ritual objects, with a soundtrack of chanted prayers by monks and nuns. A multi sensory sanctuary.
