As of late, you will find me at the intersection of books about travel and academic exploration. I just finished a thematic tandem stack of Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer and this book. Everybody on earth has a mountain that enthralls them, some to the point of romantic obsession. This book tries to find out why.

My favorite Robert Macfarlane book! If you enjoyed it, it's worth digging into two (absolutely wonderful) books that inspired him: Francis Spufford's I MAY BE SOME TIME: ICE AND THE ENGLISH IMAGINATION + Barry Lopez's ARCTIC DREAMS. Also fascinating to read Anatoly Boukreev's account of that same Everest expedition, THE CLIMB.

OMG yes! Thank you for the recs. Adding to the TBR expeditiously. I am so curious about Boukreev’s account. I read the newest edition of Into Thin Air and there’s a lengthy reflection in the end about his fallout with Boukreev and his attempt at reconciliation. I’ve been very interested to see the alternate perspective!
