1979 Colorado Geological Survey Map by Ogden Tweto: My dad found this rolled up in a cardboard tube while we were at an estate sale together in my hometown. I think it was $25, in perfect condition and came with the key too. Colorado is a very special place to me and my husband (it’s where we met & home for him) it remained in its cardboard tube for years before we even met and a few years ago we shelled out some cash and got it framed and now it hangs in our dining nook and we marvel at it everyday. The colors are so beautiful.

Got a genuine sterling silver Elsa Peretti cross necklace on Poshmark for like $100. It had a tiny little knot in the chain by the clasp, which I was able to easily untangle when it arrived. Girl who sold it to me could not care less. I had been seeking reasonably priced, gently used Tiffany's pieces for a while and was thrilled to get this for the price!

send your mom very specific thrift wishlist request while she's at her bffs lakehouse: my mom was spending a week at her hs bffs lakehouse in minnesota or maybe north dakota. to be honest, i wasn't sure the exact location, but i knew she'd be in the upper midwest aka the THRIFTING GOLDMINE. i sent her this photo and said, "if you happen to see a bud vase and/or tiny revere bowl in silver/pewter/chrome keep me in your heart." and because i have to be specific with my mom, i added, "no brass or gold pls." it was fun because throughout her trip she was sending me photos of her and her bff on a wild goose chase, stopping at yard sales, antique malls, church rummage sales, and thrift stores. i don't have the type of relationship with my mom where we text frequently or are involved in the day to day aspects of each other's lives, and this is by design. i see my parents of couple of times a month so that's how we connect. however, i will admit, i did enjoy the random updates from two women enjoying their 50+ year friendship. and yes, i did get the magical text, "found these pewter bud vases, they were $3 each so i bought them all for you."

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Frances Palmer Pottery Putnam Vase - Handmade White Earthenware: Can you picture this - me, walking home from doing some errands, I passed a stoop with some old dusty florist vases, a few random wine glasses and THIS! *in Brooklyn if there’s a pile of stuff on a stoop-it’s free. This painting from my corner flea market: It was on their sidewalk art sale one day and stopped me in my tracks. It was too expensive, so I told myself that if it hadn’t been purchased in a week, I would see if they would drop the price. The next week it was gone, so I just allowed myself to mourn its loss. Then, two weeks later it was back out. I literally pulled a U-ey to talk to the owner. I ended up getting it for $150, and it is one of the best thrift finds I’ve ever had.

My big brass baby: I have a weakness for brass animals and usually favor realistic ones, but this substantial yet delicate midcentury creature - about 12" long from hoof to tail, 12" high at antlers' tips, and SO HEAVY - needed to come home with me. I think I paid $40?

Brandi · Answer

Danish Modern Teak Dining Chairs (Schionning & Elgaard for Randers Mobelfabrik, Set of 6): A set of these chairs might be my husband’s most impressive thrift score. He found four of them mismatched with a random table at a thrift store- they were asking $100 for the whole set. He took the chairs and left the table. We later paid… significantly more… for four more at the Alameda Point Flea, but it still shakes out to a pretty amazing deal overall. What’s so unique about this design is the subtle cutout on the backrest and the little details in the woodwork of the legs.

Patricka Locke necklace: I saw this in a pile and immediately singled it out because it was so sparkly. I assumed it was a cheapo piece, but it had good weight in my hand and did I mention sparkly? Took it home, looked it up, turns out it's a Real Official Jewelry Designer piece of jewelry, and it's still a truly delightful amount of sparkly.

(Picture does not fully convey the sparkly.)

Tisvilde Antik, Tisvilde, Denmark: We fell in love with this painting in Tisvilde, Denmark, a coastal town that is only a 45-minute drive outside of Copenhagen. We got back to the States and we were still thinking about this oil painting from the antique shop in town. One hundred emails later, I managed to convince the lovely, 80 year old Danish shop owner to ship it to the U.S. Tisvilde Antik FTW.

Sarah Beck · Answer

An absolutely massive, happy painting for less than $200: I did have to rent a U-Haul for 1 hour to bring it home, but I've been looking for a big, original painting that made me happy but did not break the bank for years for one specific wall in our house. Also a rec for Design Consign (linked) in Chicago for occasionally wonderful art and furniture consignment. They also have online shopping, but I'm not sure how shipping works!

Willa · Answer

Singer 301a: $20! I saw this right at closing time and was 95% sure of what I was looking at but still wanted to do my due diligence regarding bobbin types, potential hidden internal plastic parts, astandard needle sizes, etc. At home research yielded only good things, so we rushed back first thing the next day before work and grabbed it, and at half off because it was our discount day, too! Oddly enough, it had been donated by the estate of a neighbor on our same street, who had recieved it as a wedding present and then...never used it. I took it apart, learned how to service it, my husband taught himself how to sew, and it's been our daily driver ever since. It passes the William Morris sniff test and is such a joy to sew with. Straight-stich only, but powerful enough for multiple layers of heavy duty canvas and delicate enough for crepe silk.

Dining Room Table Set: I found this authentic MCM dining set on Facebook Marketplace - it has three leaves and can size down to a cute four top! Came with 6 chairs as well. I’ll get the cushions restored someday, but it was a steal and a totally digital transaction from start to finish (FB marketplace, Venmo, Lugg for pickup and delivery!)
