Street Cheese

You know the beginning scene in Beauty and the Beast where Belle stroll-sings through town and you think, I want to live in a place with a butcher, a baker, a candlestick maker on every corner? Street Cheese fulfills that fantasy in Seattle. Women-owned (one of whom is the THIRD BEST CHEESEMONGER IN THE WORLD, according to (a competition in) France), with raclette happy hour on Thursdays (just trust me), to-go boxes of cheese and snacks, tastings galore—what more do you need? One time I went in the shop and a Swiss man offered me three different kinds of Gruyère and described where on the mountain the cows grazed for each one and I’d like to think that’s what heaven is like.

We are a town of incredible bakeries! This one is also a banger of a breakfast/brunch spot and is heavily influenced by the owner’s Japanese heritage and hits all the notes—comforting, surprising, and of course, delicious. Doesn’t hurt that it’s chic as hell, too. Get any of the sandwiches, the Japanese breakfast, and a slice of the shoyu-peanut butter pie if they have it.
