Tilden Steam Train
•••
A very favorite weekend activity in our house is cruising around on this volunteer-run tiny steam train that winds through the redwoods and bay groves of Tilden Park. And at $16 for a five punch pass, it is refreshingly uncorporatized. Magical in December when Father Solstice makes an appearance. :)

Cousin Home
•••
Best little shop in Berkeley since Tail of the Yak (RIP). Cousin Home has the neatest little selection that looks like it was pulled from a Maybeck craftsman in the hills. Best Berkeley merch. My kid rocks the steam train tee.

East Bay Vivarium
•••
Oldest vivarium in the country! To me, this is a place of nightmares, but to my 2- and 5 year-old, it is pure bliss. I will say enjoy the music selection which is generally either death metal (which really elevates the experience) or neo soul from the early aughts (the best).

Strawberry Creek Park
•••
A really lovely park made out of natural materials and with a funky old slightly dangerous/exhilarating slide. Magical little cafe on the green called Secret Cafe and a Phoenix Pastificio outpost here too where you can buy Dungeness crab ravioli for dinner later. A delight!

An independently run ceramic painting studio oozing creative vibes. Perfect afternoon activity with kiddos. Once a month they stay open late and have wine and cheese for adults' nights out. The Color Me Mine of my dreams, essentially.

Favorite place to hang with my kids, open to the public when MLK Middle School is closed (weekends and after 6pm on weekdays). An amazing mulberry tree and several fig trees perfect for climbing. Pack a picnic dinner and enjoy.

Berkeley Paths
•••
Favorite community resource in all of Berkeley. Historic paths, lots of urban fruit foraging, and beautiful architecture and gardening peeping. A few charming pocket parks along the way featuring many very charismatic erratic glaciers that dot the Berkeley Hills. Get a map and explore! The Path Wanderer's Association has programmed walks and suggested routes on their website.

A cultural gem. Exquisite building, stellar programming, and the Art Lab is a favorite for picking up interesting risographs and doing projects with my kids. In the summer they have movie nights projected outside the building. Love the rotating entry gallery displays.

Strawberry Canyon Fire Road Hike
•••
Perfect mix of redwoods, architecture, and views. One very steep section, otherwise, flat or gently sloping. Fun to dip in the Strawberry Canyon Pool after a long run or hike if its open. Love how close this hike is to campus and the homes of the Berkeley Hills while feeling out of the hubbub of the city.
