Ballerette

Italian-made leather flats galore. I walked around the city thinking about these oxblood Mary Janes for a full day and ultimately couldn’t leave them behind.

Whoever designed this church had no chill and I appreciate that.

il Bisonte
•••
Beautiful leather shop with products made exclusively in Tuscany. So many Florentine leather manufacturers’ logos are not giving, but their jumping bison is so cool. My husband got a passport cover here with his new initials embossed to match mine.

Pizza Napoli 1955

Platonic ideal Italian pizza. We did not get the advertised heart-shaped pizza, but probably should have.

Gelateria de’ Medici
•••
We stayed on the same block as this fantastic gelateria; lucky us. We got the Crema de’ Medici flavor almost every night and never quite figured out what was in it. If you do, please report back.

I live for a foreign grocery store. This one carries beautifully packaged Italian food, wine, bath and body products, and sweets. The best place to buy a little something for whoever’s watching your cat.

Babae
•••
Florence is famous for its wine windows, but the lines can get crazy. More fun for me was sitting indoors at Babae, where you can watch how the window works from behind the scenes, all while enjoying the same delicious wine you’d have to wait for outside.

I could have stayed in the Chapel Of The Magi for hours. When you get to the gallery at the end of the tour be sure to grab a seat and spend some time looking up at the Giordano ceiling.

Scuola del Cuoio
•••
Florence is known for its leather, which of course means it’s now saturated with tourist trap leather shops. For genuine Florentine leather products, you can’t do much better than the leather school, where the next generation of artisans makes everything onsite. Their products cost what fine leather goods should, i.e. not cheap, but the quality is unmatched and they’ll emboss them with your initials. I got one of their horsebit wallets which I’m pretty sure will outlive me.

Osteria Vecchio Cancello

We were so delighted by this cozy dinner spot in Florence, which played smooth jazz and looked exactly like a 1990s Tuscan kitchen. Get the pappa al pomodoro.
