Zorthian Ranch
•••
Zorthian Ranch seems to be one of those Los Angeles places where people have either never heard of it, or widen their eyes knowingly when the name is uttered. I visited recently, and I vaguely knew it was something of a commune, sprawling across forty-some acres in the foothills of Altadena, filled with found art; that there were goats and horses, DIY architecture, full of artists, and concerts and clothing was often optional, and that’s all I needed to know when I saw they were giving tours again.

Monestary of the Angels
•••
Monestary of the Angels has been acquired by Homeboy Industries, continuing the monastery's legacy as a place of restoration and hope. From the LA Times: "Homeboy said it plans to maintain the exterior of the Spanish-style property and will continue selling the well-known pumpkin bread and candy, though there might be gaps in service during the transition. It’s also working to eventually allow community members back in to pray in the chapel. Treatment facilities often face pushback from neighbors concerned over safety, but Homeboy said the site will be staffed and supervised at all hours of the day and that is has a 'long track record of running safe, well-managed programs across Los Angeles.' 'If the nuns see [our plans] as really continuous of what their ministry was for perhaps a century, the hope is the neighbors will feel ... it’s in good hands,' Boyle said."
