UCSF Parnassus Kalmanovitz Library
•••
Sweeping views! Even looking at high-up roofs feels magisterial. Only the first floor is available to the public, which can get a little noisy from the café and med students working on group assignments. You can‘t get mad at annoying students, though, because everyone is brilliant and going to be a doctor.

The Interval at Long Now + Blue Bear piano rental
•••
The Interval is known for its cocktails but is also a lovely café during the day. They have the best tea in SF courtesy of Song Tea that they prepare fastidiously in glass vessels and then pour into beakers with with precious stoppers. I assume their coffee is equally thoughtful. It's quiet, I was actually able to read in peace and work on my laptop without headphones on. The dub reggae helped, too. It is actually crazy that I hadn't been here before, given how long I've lived in the Bay Area and my tech and cultural interests. I was expecting a more nerdily offputting vibe due the steam punk aesthetics, a cocktail called Hacker Club, and the damn clock. It was happily more Museum of Jurassic Technology-adjacent in spirit. And then oh wow, rent a piano practice room at Blue Bear School of Music around the corner for $5/hr. I brought Philip Glass sheet music!

Dining solo at the bar at Hog Island Oyster in the Ferry Building
•••
The simple pleasure of oysters, maybe a ceviche, the house white, and zoning out on the water. If you work nearby, it’s a real treat to leave the office a little early and work on your laptop with oysters.

Lover's Lane + Wood Line in the Presidio
•••
A reminder to smell California. Lover's Lane is just a nice short walk up or down a hill, among dramatic, towering trees, and nearby is Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line, a sculpture of zigzagging, felled tree trunks lining the path of a Eucalyptus forest.

Clement St. Farmer's market + toy store + pasta before noon
•••
Take the bus (a moment for my child: "BUS BUS BUS! HOLD ON!!!") to the Clement St. farmer's market. Chocolate chip or Einkorn cookie from Day Moon. Weekly home delivery from H&H Fish was among my favorite things about living in Oakland. The next best thing is getting it here! Great people and fish ("Fishy!!!"). Swing by Tantrum, an awesome toy store. Maybe your kid needs a $55 stuffed corn. Pasta Supply before noon. 11:40am was the height of luxury. I could park the stroller and get a high chair at a 4-top. No one was there. Mafaldine + cultured butter + parm is a classic, but I'm also into deconstructing a sandwich. Their house salad is great. Extra credit: The Future Past on Clement is a well-curated vintage store that does beautiful denim repair and alterations.

Sippy cup wine + duck fat Chex mix at the opera
•••
The SF Symphony and Opera need supporters, especially people who aren’t old. We saw Richard Strauss's rarely-performed The Woman Without a Shadow a few years back, with production design by David Hockney. It was a spectacular four hours and I had no idea what was going on. During one of the two intermissions, I got duck fat + Chinese five spice Chex mix and sippy cup sauv blanc. You gotta go.

The Legion of Honor on a weekday afternoon
•••
Go see the Etruscans (it’s closing soon), the Rodins, the tiny awesome Miró art books exhibit. Get up close with a Dutch still life and remember what matters. Then, go sit outside at the cafe with a notebook, a book, a not-phone, with a wine and hang. And then go wander the Lands End Trail. What a day! The image here is a close-up from one of my favorite paintings, Willem van Aelst’s Flowers in a Silver Vase
