Christiania, the autonomous intentional community inside Copenhagen’s borders: My mom’s second cousin lived here in her teens, and always takes me for a visit when I’m in Denmark. The food, markets, and houses are really interesting and fun, and it’s a very welcoming place.

Luisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark: You can ride your bike up the coast here from Copenhagen! (You start by bringing your bike on a short train ride) The museum is one of my favorites in the world not just because of the superb collection but also because of the architecture and sculpture garden. A must see if you’re visiting Copenhagen.

folkehuset absalon: every city needs an absalon! this place is one part cafe, one part community center, 100% amazing. they have all sorts of events, but my favorite thing is their nightly meals that you can buy tickets to in advance and then when you arrive you’re seated at long tables interspersed with strangers who quickly become friends. the food was good and the company was even better!
