SF Planning’s GIS Tools

SF plant finder for identifying hyper local native plants - really cool sort and discovery tools Super cool maps: historic landmarks, swipe map to to see how the city and your neighborhood has changed over time (since ‘38), privately owned public spaces (unique publicly accessible hangout spots), the distribution of trees in SF SF find to quickly identify all of your elected representatives and local services MORE

Fun cocktails, kind staff, incredible food. Pretty easy to walk in and post up, and the kitchen closes at 12. It’s in a perfect location in the mission to start, continue, or end your night. Best burger I’ve had in the Bay and the fries come with malt vinegar aioli 💆🏾♀️

SF coffee shop rose water pistachio croissant
•••
Tis the season! Rosewater pistachio croissants have returned! (they are seasonal and only available on weekends, which is probably for the best) I am not a croissant elitist so do not judge me if you hate them but man these are so incredibly perfect. Rose + pista are the perfect combo and these croissants are so indulgent with a cup of coffee, the best way to Saturday and Sunday.

july through october at the dahlia dell
•••
Truly a magical place. The dahlia society members are a constant presence and are so happy to share information with visitors. It’s fun hearing about all of the different jobs the members have, and they have so many fascinating stories to share (the dahlia named “for Robin” Williams!). I never knew how many different varieties of dahlias there were!

Newkirk’s
•••
When I wake up craving a breakfast sandwich on a ROLL (often) I feel blessed that Newkirks is in town and truly truly delivers. They also serve incredible not breakfast sandwiches. Their homemade fermented sauces are solid and the vibe is very chill. They used to have Martinelli’s in the Apple glass, but their strawberry lemonade is an acceptable alt. Love the pinball machines.

Volunteer together!
•••
Most states/cities/localities have consolidated listservs of volunteering opportunities. There are tons of options you can sort through - sidewalk cleaning, tree planting, etc. It’s free, a group situation and time bound if you are on the fence about them, and it helps you get a sense of who they are - all while serving your community!

Ruth Asawa at MSP
•••
I love the galleries at Minnesota Street Project!!! This year Ruth Asawa’s family opened a permanent exhibit in the space. They rotate in pieces from their private collection + art created by students from her namesake art school. Truly incredible to have the opportunity to see her work through her family’s eyes.

SF Art Book Fair
•••
One of my favorite yearly rituals since moving to SF! I used to live across the street and Friday during the day is your best bet to avoid a crazy rush or line around the block. It feels like a fever dream when you’re there — but it’s such a cool opportunity to see amazing art and support hyperlocal independent publishers, artists, and designers from around the world. V fun time!

exploring SF via the crosstown trail
•••
Highly recommend for anyone new to SF. The Crosstown trail (and double cross trail) is marked to take you across the entire city and through almost every neighborhood. From the Bay to the Pacific Ocean you’ll experience almost every microclimate, explore so many parks, and climb the tiled stairs - it’s magical! It’s super fun to build in pit stops in neighborhoods you’ve never been to, and there’s a lovely sense of camaraderie when you meet fellow crosstown’ers (?) along the way!

Being a Roxie member
•••
The Roxie in SF is so fun and community oriented. Most of the movies I’ve seen here have become my favorites. Being a member is a built in excuse to go at least twice a month. The magic of the movie theater is alive and well and not just in an AMC!
