Casa Monti: Stayed here in March and it's not cheap, but I felt like the value was significantly better than similar class hotels. The hotel is designed by Laura Gonzalez who did Hotel Hana in Paris, another favorite, and the rooms are really comfortably sized.

Antica Dimora de Michaelis: This hotel is so inexpensive, in a perfect location. Like $75/night even in the peak season. Make sure your room is in the « de Michaelis » building as is has the most fun rococo interiors of the three hotel buildings. It’s no frills but has everything you need and ice cold AC for the summer which is rare. Rooms are spacious and central. Could not recommend it enough.

YellowSquare Rome: The kind of hostel you’d imagine in a teen backpacking movie: a comically small elevator that chitters up through the middle of a stairwell (it’s often faster to walk), unremarkable apartments-turned-rooms, and a cafe/bar across the street that serves free spaghetti dinners to guests, meaning every twentysomething packed inside YellowSquare packs inside (and outside) the bar each night at 7 pm. Remarkably charming in a 9-star-on-HostelWorld kind of way.

Relais Orso: Not cheap-cheap, but nothing kind of is in Rome. A really lovely hotel off a side street that’s barely a block to the Piazza Navona. Quiet and picturesque, walkable to all the sights, and only mid on the touristy scale.

Travel the way Italians do: Tons of religious guesthouses in all the major tourist hubs — I highly recommend staying in one if you can plan in advance (they often book up) and are all right with very spartan surroundings. They’re spotless, extremely friendly, and deeply, authentically Italian.

My favorite neighborhoods in Rome to look for housing are Prati, Parione/Regola, Pigneto, and the area around San Giovanni in Laterano.

G-Rough A Boutique Hotel Rome: G-Rough, a bad name and a lowkey very cool hotel. Rooms with edgy interior design and a bar in the lobby. We felt like locals because we opted to stay at a place that prefer you call it a home apartment, not a hotel.

The Fifteen Keys: The Fifteen Keys only had 15 rooms (hence the name), and it has such a special feel. Almost a b&b without the over-personal intrusion or forced conversation. Clean, minimal, nicely appointed rooms with great staff. The real highlight is the breakfast so make sure and add that in. :)
