One of the best parks I’ve been to, beautiful views of the city and Lake Union, rolling grassy hills, and industrial ruins. Take a wander through it and sit and watch the sunset!

Port of Long Beach Harbor Tours

The port of Long Beach offers free boat tours of the harbor from May-September. I went last Saturday and it was fantastic. Tickets are awarded through a lottery system, I signed up for the lottery for May and June with no luck. Then last month I received an email informing me that I had been chosen to take a tour of the port. I now have a more intimate knowledge of what winning the power ball must feel like. Everyone on the tour is really excited to be there (as they have also won the lottery), and it’s so awesome to see all of the machinery and engineering feats of modern day cargo ships up close. A good reminder of the triumphs of industrialization and a peek behind the curtain into the infrastructure that supports our everyday lives.

Parco Savello

Buy a bottle of wine (or bev of your choice) and snacks at a Conad or Carrefour and bring them to the Parco Savello for sunset! Views of St. Peter’s basilica, there’s usually someone playing live music, lots of shady places to sit!

Take a Walk Through Angelino Heights

Streets of 19th century Victorian houses adjacent to Echo Park… feels like walking into another city or another time. Beautiful to walk around unguided, but the LA Conservancy offers tours on the weekend as well

Grianán of Aileach

Visited this stone fort on my family trip to county donegal. Free to visit, beautiful views, no guided tours, fun to climb, signs are informative and provide enough historic context without overwhelming visitors. Lovely experience!

Britanski Trg Flea Market

If you’re in Zagreb on a Sunday definitely worth checking out the flea market in Britanski Trg, lots of beautiful jewelry/crochet/embroidered linens. I did find that almost everything else in the city is closed on Sundays, something I wasn’t aware of in advance.

Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

Visited with my family yesterday for Mother’s Day. My mom is a native plant fanatic and our wandering through the garden converted my dad into being one too. Lots of beautiful sights and smells. Fantastically designed handouts.
