Fillmore East, Manhattan - End of 1969
•••
40.7276°N 73.9886°W - 105 2nd Avenue at East 6th Street, Manhattan. Music biz impresario Bill Graham's Fillmore East only lasted for a short while as far as concert venues are concerned (March '68 to June '71), but in those few years, the theater was played by a huge number of acclaimed musicians (setlist archive). A snapshot testament of this is beheld on the building's marquee at the end of 1969. Hendrix was playing in his "Band of Gypsys" power trio config with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox. Recordings from the second of the two-night stand (the first was an NYE bash with one set played before midnight, the second starting at) were used for the devastatingly good Band of Gypsys album. (After several piecemeal releases, all four sets were at last released altogether in 2019 as the Songs for Groovy Children box set, albeit with a few song omissions.) Over the next two nights, the Grateful Dead played four sets of their own, much of which would be included on the 30th issue of the long-running Dave's Picks archival release series. The "Dark Star" that shows up toward the end of the late show of the Jan. 2 concert is my absolute favorite of those that I've heard. Literally dozens of other live albums have sourced their audio from Fillmore East shows, one of the most notable being the Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East (recorded March 12 & 13, 1971)--the Allman Bros. were still just getting started when the photo included here was taken, but they were actually one of the opening acts for the Blood, Sweat & Tears dates! Dig that sweet MGB in the photo, no?
