my favorite book about writing isn’t a book about writing at all; Ben Shahn’s lectures on artmaking have been my creative companion for many years. i reference the final chapter, The Education of an Artist, so frequently that i’ve had to tape the binding of my copy back together page by page. revisiting him always knocks the dust loose. “for whom does one paint?”
