Boldt Castle was the ultimate declaration of love from one man to his wife. George Boldt bought Hart Island and renamed it to Heart Island, with the sole intention to build a fucking castle. He ordered various stoneworks and marble carvings on the building be made into the shape of hearts. Love is littered throughout the exterior of Boldt's castle and grounds. Swan ponds, hedges cut into hearts, and heart-shaped tiles in the hallways, to name a few. Construction started in 1900, but was abruptly canceled in 1904 after Louise - aforementioned wife - died. George never set foot on Heart Island again, and died in 1916. The castle was left to rot for decades before restoration efforts were made in the 70s.
This gilded age marvel was a treat to visit.
