Very engaging and quick read for a group. Everyone in the book club had big thoughts about this one. Even more interesting if there are different religions/religious upbringings amongst the group.

Stories I fell in love with
Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers
•••
Two short stories which together tell of a human rethinking their purpose and what brings them fulfillment, and a wild robot learning about humans needs. Even with such thoughtful subject matter, the book stays refreshingly grounded and light and leaves you feeling buoyed. A hopeful and illuminating balm for the sensitive soul that paints a beautiful picture of what life could be like if we opt to take real care of the living world around us.

Half our group loved this and half hated it. Both agreed that Groff somehow crafted bleakness and hopelessness in lush lyrical language.

When the Stars Go Dark (Paula McLain)

This one came out a few years ago but I feel it may not have gotten the attention it should have. Anna, a veteran missing persons detective in San Francisco, is hit with a family tragedy and seeks refuge in the Mendocino area where she grew up. When a teenage girl goes missing in her hometown, Anna is reminded of an unsolved murder of a young girl during her childhood. Is there a connection? If your book club enjoyed Liz Moore's Long Bright River (or even her recent hit God of the Woods), this might be a good book club pick for your group!

Spare, vivid, a pitch-perfect classic that somehow nobody has read before. Use it as the entry point for book club talk about beauty culture, tradwifery, Mar-a-Lago face, Ozempic face, "family values," and whether you think today's Stepfords would be having their bucchal fat removed (yes or yes?).
