How to End a Story by Helen Garner

I’m bowled over by this collection. What an astonishing life, juicy as a tabloid, told so honestly. A flawed woman so willing to reckon with her flaws and the hurt she’s caused. A testament to how fun life can be, even as you age, of the things you give up when you choose the wrong partner, of how you can always come back to yourself. Her descriptions of the must mundane things had me breathless, the quality of light, a bird’s wing, a passing cloud, or the temperature of the air. I will return to this many times over.
