My sister and I had crazy curly hair and our mom had straight hair and nary a clue. My kid showed up with a MANE that went curly early and I promised to do right by her. This is what has worked for several years running without pain/tears!
Wash with a no-poo product (Hair Story does a solid one, dupes also work great!). While the product is worked in (be generous with product and maybe throw in a scalp massage, oooo), use the tangle teezer. Start at the ends of the hair, and grip ABOVE the section you’re brushing, so kiddo doesn’t feel the pulls. When they say ow, THANK THEM for telling you and hold the section more tightly/continue more slowly.
Once the whole head is detangled, put a part in with a comb (if you want) and then rinse the hair (a large plastic tub for pouring water over the head is tops for this). Pour going “with” the hair so you have the part defined. WHILE THE HAIR IS WET (we are still in bath, everyone!) put in your styler of choice and give the fully wet hair a gentle scrunch all over. Depending on curl pattern, you’ll probably see the waves/ringlets start to get in formation. If things frizz when you’re scrunching, flick a little more water over — everything will bounce back!
Finish bath, and when drying, gently pat the excess water off the hair, but don’t rub and for the love of Pete, don’t EVER brush that hair or comb it when it’s dry. Just let it be and watch the magic happen ♥️
