Here’s how it works: you make a list of movies you want to see. You put the entries on the list into a “bucket” — could be a doc, a folder on a drive, or actual slips of paper in an actual bucket. Then, each night, you pull a movie out of the bucket. The only rule: you gotta watch what you pull. Even if it’s Barry Lyndon.
Here’s what happens: the indignant feeling of “not being in the mood for that movie right now” — the feeling that made you re-watch Happy Endings four times? That seemingly all-powerful feeling is actually only about 15 mins long. Once you’re kinda in Movie Bucket, you’re glad to be there. You’re gonna start a close reading of Barry Lyndon. You’re gonna relax your grip on the dowsing rod of your own comfort and go on a ride with some art. You’re gonna let go and let Movie Bucket.

Barry Lyndon is a great movie, at any time...
This practice is replicating the 90s-00s experience of having a stack of rented DVD/VHS and having to watch something you're not in the mood for because it's due back at the store in two days. Or renting whatever was on the shelf because the exciting new releases were out of stock. It's a great way to expand your taste.
