Start with something you love!

My expert knitter aunt told me to start with wash cloths. But I don’t particularly want or like knitted wash cloths. I wanted a cool hat! I started with the Escher Beanie from Rows Knitwear, which looks complicated but isn’t and crucially had video tutorials. So that’s my rec: find an easy pattern you love (so you’ll be motivated through the hard parts) that has video tutorials. You’ll be in business!
