Wow. I read this fantastic novel in one day. Ann Patchett called it a spectacular triumph and that sums it up. It hit me hard--there's a lot of overlap in Afghan and Persian language and culture, and there were times I felt the characters could have been talking about me and my family. Because--oh yeah--the whole story is told about the main characters by the members of their community, the press, and random strangers they encounter. So, page by page, your understanding of what's happened changes, depending on the narrator.
