We are spending a week in Santa Fe for an artist residency...I would love recs for hikes, great food, cocktails and dive bars. I'll be there shooting photographs for new work so hikes are important.

A drive down the Turquoise Trail is on our list every time we go to Santa Fe! There is a “mining museum” in Los Cerrillos that is full of tiny treasures, plus a tavern with just-hits-the-spot food and drinks. Further down the road is the artist’s colony of Madrid, where there’s a mix of galleries to suit every taste & budget. The road ends in Albuquerque, and you can either loop straight back up to Santa Fe or stop for dinner at the Route 66-themed food court at El Vado Motel.

Sublime enchiladas, breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros. So good we went back a second time. Sitting at the community table is fun and easier than waiting for an individual one.

I am sure you’ve already heard great things, so I will just double down and say Tents is a quick hike but a worthwhile adventure through cone-shaped rock formations (Consider grabbing lunch at Rancho De Chimayo on the way!)

Santa Fe is known for its incredible singletracks. I’d start by renting a bike from The Broken Spoke or Sincere Cycles, then ask them what makes sense for your ability that day. They’ll point you in the right direction.

This is my favorite spot for food in town! Tru Treasures of Santa Fe, right next door to the original location, is also an awesome vintage store. Additionally, I highly recommend doing day trips to the surrounding countryside if you’ve got a car — the hike at Jemez Springs is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever done, and I haven’t been because it was closed for a long time post-Covid but Bandalier National Monument looks incredible. Taos Pueblo is fascinating and the fry bread sold by vendors there is delicious, too.

Georgia O’Keeffe’s home in New Mexico

Case in point, the most beautiful home I’ve ever been to. This was the place she lived for most of her last 35 years and apparently viewed as a sort of canvas. The kitchen is wonderfully retro, the fireplaces are magical, and the setting — with an irrigated garden that’s authentic to the Pueblo in which the plot is located — is fascinating, too. Plus, nearby Ghost Ranch has incredible vistas and really great hiking options.
