This is a love letter to voice notes! My mom died when I was four, and I have very little documentation of her just being herself, talking about nothing, laughing — little capsules of ephemeral minutiae that are hard to capture and keep otherwise. I’ve been recording voice notes for my kids and emailing them to them. They are little, so they won’t access these for years, but then they’ll know about how they would show up with a notepad at the front door to take restaurant orders from anyone walking in, or how they pronounced sparkly water (fuckery watery). There’s something that feels important about an informal vocal record that can someday show them more of who I am. I would have loved to have this from my mom. Long live the voice note 💞
