Talking to your pets

If there is one thing to know about me, it’s that I love and respect all animals and in particular, my animals. I think anyone who has a pet should try talking to them. I don’t mean in a baby voice, I mean talking to them with respect like you would a friend.

I talk to my cats all the time, and it seems to be important to my bond with them. They can easily tell you’re vocalizing with other humans, so why not just go ahead and include them too? My opinion is that they can learn at least words if not more. For example, every day I tell Doris she is my best friend, and she does a great job of showing me that it’s mutual!!!!! I just got home and asked Butter how his day was, what did he do? And he flopped over, looked me in the eyes and slow blinked a bunch. You can’t tell me he isn’t also saying he’s happy to see me.

I talk to my cats like I would a child who is learning, and sometimes like a peer. Why not? Their whole life is hanging out with me, we’re both living beings and one is not more important than the other.
