Essays or stories that circle the topic of taste, discernment, relating to art as a means of relating to ourselves?

I think about this essay from Ira Glass all the time when it comes to the aspect of creative work I’ve shortened to “the taste gap.”

As a creative I’m constantly training my eye to recognize the difference between what I know is great and my own good work, which motivates me to get better and close the gap.

“In the age of AI, braving “the gap” between acquiring taste and developing skill is more important than ever. It’s uncomfortable to make shitty art & there’s a temptation to take a shortcut if the alternative is to quit entirely… but the struggle is what makes it good. It’s what makes YOU good. The journey is the destination etc etc”
