okay full disclosure: I don't actually own this kettle yet but I am eagerly awaiting one to show up on eBay. I mean... isn't it gorgeous?

and while you definitely don't need a designer one, an electric kettle (like the one I usually use from Costco) is an essential for hot pot, to keep refilling the pot as water evaporates. an electric kettle > a stovetop one because it allows you to enjoy the food and company without babysitting the kettle.
