One of my favorite cookbooks. Rich in history and vignettes. Explains the regional differences in many classics and everything I’ve made has turned out great.

Her all shortening pie crust is easy and I keep some in the freezer for galettes.

“I LOVE THIS BOOK. I LOVE TONI TIPTON MARTIN. Every recipe is a careful, sometimes a bit intricate but always incredible hit. A real love letter to African American cooking. This book helped me develop my own gumbo and jamblaya recipes. My favorite recipe is the Pickled Shrimp.”

“This book is both so wonderful to read, packed with stories and archival history, but the recipes are sooo good. Great doable versions of classic dishes with big flavor. I kept checking it out so I bought it.”
