Wild Tales (2014): favorite movie all time, six short films that all explore rage in different contexts

Sarah Cooney · Answer

The Actor: I'm obsessed with this movie (and not just because my husband wrote it)--the movie takes a deep look at identity, memory, and rebuilding a life... then making choices between what you had and what you've created. The acting is fantastic and Andre Holland and Gemma Chan are amazing together. And don't just take it from me--it was a NYT Critic's Pick.

The Hedgehog: I don’t remember how I came across this movie, I think it was playing on HBO or something but I was immediately engrossed - don’t judge a book by its cover! Every person you will ever encounter has so many hidden complexities! Anyway, I watched this and then devoured the book that inspired it. Truly incredible!

Breakdown (1997): Not sure if it's considered obscure, but, it's a 90's film that doesn't seem to get talked about much. My hubby and I recently rewatched it and it is still quite a thriller.

We might have seen it on Tubi.

All We Imagine as Light (Payal Kapadia) (2024): gorgeous intergenerational story of three women in Mumbai with the second half /an interlude in Maharashtra

Woman in the Dunes (1964): Good answers to this probably depend on what kind of movies you like (and TBH I have a hard time gauging whether something is obscure), but here's something that Wikipedia describes as a "Japanese New Wave avant-garde arthouse psychological thriller," about a man trapped in a house at the bottom of a sand dune and tasked with continuously shoveling the sand so that the house isn't buried. A singular work, enigmatic and mesmerizing.

(Others that I've rec'd here previously that might also fit the bill (they're described in more detail in the linked collection): RRR (2022), Attack the Block (2011), Red Rock West (1993), Straight to Hell (1987), Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974), The Spirit of the Beehive (1973), Seconds (1966), Ashes and Diamonds (1958), and any of these four Judy Holliday comedies.

Steve M · Answer

Drive My Car (2021): Not sure how obscure this is as it got some international buzz at the time. But easy enough to find on the Criterion collection.

Based on Haruki Murakami's short story. Here's the quick breakdown: "Yusuke Kafuku, a stage actor and director, still unable, after two years, to cope with the loss of his beloved wife, accepts to direct Uncle Vanya at a theater festival in Hiroshima. There he meets Misaki, an introverted young woman, appointed to drive his car. In between rides, secrets from the past and heartfelt confessions will be unveiled."

Pretty heartfelt. Emotional. Almost sickening at times to watch if you're familiar with any of the emotions.
