Heading into another MN winter and my old coat is done. I need something that will work for school drop offs, running errands, and frigid winter hikes (one coat for all the things). What's the warmest, but still cute, long winter coat out there?

Fellow Minnesotan here. This is what I wear out and about. I wear a wool coat to work but this is what I wear for errands, shoveling snow, etc. You can always get at least 40%. I’ve recommended it to two transplants over the years and they love it as their only coat.

It took me a very long time to find the perfect coat for nyc - warm but not too bulky. Fitted enough but also roomy. Marmot - A few color and length options as well.

I’m a firm believer that winter coats shouldn’t be black. When the sun sets at 3pm you need some color! I love this coat, it’s more than enough for PNW winters but not technically MN-tested. I think it looks a little frumpy with the hood but it’s removable so I leave it off and use a scarf or umbrella.

I bought this coat on 50% sale several years ago (an eye-dropping $275 at the time) and it is the best winter purchase I've ever made. The rain jacket is great. The base layer coat is warm. The two together? I can tackle any -20 degree Minnesota winter day. It's not like... that cute. But I just put a scarf on and call it a day.

When I decided to leave LA for upstate NY in December (🤦🏻♀️) I had a panic attack and bought this coat from The Arrivals a great brand designed by an architect (think lots of function that actually looks good) from a Scandinavian country. I have worn only this coat for our four winters doing all the things you noted. I plan to keep it forever. SO WARM and so chic - can’t believe I’m saying that about a puffer - and lots of ways to keep warm or allow air flow as you and the world cool down or heat up. Sadly they’re not in biz anymore so you’ll need to peep the resale sites here’s a few from various spots in various colors. EBAY - Khaki Green Size S - as above in main photo

Atlas Cocoon Coat by Madewell
$145

I was looking for a long winter coat for those cold, windy days when there’s no snow, and I happened to find this black Madewell coat at my local thrift store for $45. I couldn’t pass it up! I’ve worn it for two winters now, and it has held up really well. It’s warm without being overly bulky, and I sized up so I can comfortably wear a sweater underneath. The only downside is that I have a cat, so I have to lint-roll it pretty much every time I leave the house! I believe the retail price was around $350, so even at $145, I’d still consider this a great deal for the quality and warmth.
