This book captivated me as a child because of the illustrations. Then when I encountered it again as a mother, I was blown away at how progressive Miss Rumphius was. A woman who doesn't get married, doesn't have children, and travels the world. Our copy at home is falling apart and I just ordered a hardcover version. My 11-year-old daughter has moved away from picture books, so this new book will mostly be for me.

This was one of my first books as a kid decades vintage by the time I was given it decades ago and it’s still in my world. As the kid of a painter they started the indoctrination early and it’s one of the gifts I’ll never be able to thank him for. If you have or will have kiddos start them young.

I saved all my kid’s book jackets and mod podged them to our (shared) bathroom wall. I strategically placed eyeglasses randomly around so guests could play Where’s Waldo while “dropping the kids off at the pool”.
