Let the movers pack for you
•••
I did this for the first time on my fifth move in 12 years. this is an if you can afford it thing, for sure, but it’s also not nearly as expensive as you’d imagine, depending on size of your place. You can also have them do certain rooms and not others. Having them pack the kitchen for example, is huge. Have them come the day before the actual move. You still have to organize everything for them, so you kind of end up “pre-packing” in a sense, but that is plenty to exhaust you and then they do the hard physical part. Well worth the money if you can find a company you can trust—-and if you’re moving far, definitely buy your own insurance for your stuff.

At some point I dropped perfection and just started striving for practicality. Perfect for literally everything you can think of and more durable and sustainable than a zip lock!

plants

I’m also in the same boat, moving at the end of the month from a place I truly love. I have been comforting myself by imagining the plants I’ve lovingly grown and cultivated in my current apartment living in my new space, that feels special to me.

embrace the chaos

I am not sure it’s possible to feel grounded and sane in the middle of a move. But it might help to know that chaos is expected (in the same way that you come to expect meltdowns when traveling with children 😅). Also, once you get into your new space, surround yourself with a bunch of houseplants. I may be recommending the most obvious thing but it truly makes such a difference!

home sweet home
Unpack art & books first

a little thing, but a huge bummer/anxiety trigger for me when moving is the anonymity of a new space, so i try to prioritize unpacking the things that make me feel the most at home. i hang art, even if it’s in a temporary spot (or not yet framed), and i pull out my books, even if at first I have to stack them on the floor. i feel less lonely/stressed/whatever with those things around!

I just moved out of the home I lived in for 20+ years so it was a big one. Keep your moving supplies together: packing tape, scissors, sharpies. I kept them in an apron pocket. Pack one room at a time. Paper plates are your friend. And when in doubt, lower the bar and let good enough be good enough.
