1000000% one of the most incredible things I have seen IN MY LIFE. When you get to go somewhere where the architecture has been designed especially to showcase specific artworks… wow. The de Maria was my fave.

And FWIW we didn’t have accommodation on the island but managed a day trip from Osaka via train and ferry. It was a LONG day (like 6am-10pm or similar) but no regrets.

Totally. We stayed in a teensy home stay place on the island but could have come in. I reeeally wanted to stay at the Benesse Hotel but it was sold out (museum tix were almost sold out too ack). This is not a place you can roll up to last minute!

“Seeing (feeling?) James Turrell's Open Field was a profoundly moving experience for me. I also recommend checking out Minamidera, another Turrell work housed in a building designed by Tadao Ando on the other side of Naoshima.”
