I have a ton of respect for Venusian minimalism. Maya Lin is brilliant at making large-scale sculptural work feel so balanced, peaceful, and feminine. The fact that she is an Asian-American woman who designed the Vietnam Memorial at 21 years old, then stood her ground when it caused such widespread political controversy for not being a traditionally figurative and heroic monument to war, is incredible in itself. But the most stunning fact is that the controversy dissipated overnight when people actually experienced it in person. They were moved by the connection they felt to those that were lost. That's the quiet way Venus triumphs.
