The permanently relevant and endlessly beautiful 13th chapter still hits like a sack of bricks. "There are monstrous changes taking place in the world, forces shaping a future whose face we do not know. Some of these forces seem evil to us, perhaps not in themselves but because their tendency is to eliminate other things we hold good."

Wow…I thought “what a coincidence, the first book recommendation is the incredible book I’m reading right now. And then you mention Lonesome Dove, the one I read right before that blew my mind and heart. Both are incredible journeys. Lonesome Dove captured me in a much deeper way, but East of Eden is powerful in its own right, and I have never highlighted so much in anything I’ve read…I think it’s over 50% of the book 😆 Will be following your recommendations…looking for the next one.

I love this book too!!! It always reminds me of the Summer time in Brooklyn because that was where/when I first read it. I may have gotten Steinbeck’s seal as a tattoo also 🙈

As a teenager, Cathy was the most complex character I had ever encountered. When someone tell me they love Elizabeth Struot, I ask them if they’ve read Steinbeck. Such empathy and nuance in depicting characters.

Down And Out In London and Paris by George Orwell. One of the only books I've ever read that really 'takes you there'. My desert island read.
