this one is long.
food is fucking expensive. here is how I try to get the most out of my food. (from a lazy person)
save your veg scraps - keep a ziplock bag in your freezer and throw scraps in there as you chop. I usually stockpile scraps for a week or so before making broth. It won’t taste the same every time so it’s a fun mystery lol. lots of broth recipes include adding additional veg for flavor but I usually don’t because the whole point is to use what you have instead of buying more.
when you have a bunch throw them in a crock pot. i’ve seen people use instant pots but those confuse me. then cover it with water!!!
this week mine had parsley, onions, jalepeno, and chicken bones lol. — sometimes I get a rotisserie chicken, debone, freeze half for cooking later, use half to make chicken salad or something easy! then you can add the bones to your mystery broth for extra flavor. i don’t do this every time but it’s nice when I do.
the key to this process is using your time wisely. i like to do this process at night, throw the pot on low or even just warm, and when i wake up i can strain it. probably not great to leave a crock pot on unattended but ??? time is money and im tired.
after straining you can freeze, or use right away to make something! i use mine right away to make dried beans. just put the strained broth back into the crockpot, throw some dried beans in there, and cook away!
