Yes, yes, it's classic advice, but for a reason: when visiting a new city or country, go to the supermarket!

Some things to do there, and questions to ask yourself:

• check out the local potato chip flavors and candy

• find a fun drink you've never heard of

• what item is far more represented than at your supermarket back home? what item that you are used to finding back home is impossible to find?

• scout the produce - anything new?

• How does checkout work? Are shopping bags provided, produce weighed at the counter or no, do people pay more with card, cash or check, how orderly are the queues, what's the general vibe?

• get some new snacks and be on your way!
