art therapy heals me so I am constantly oscillating between micro dosing and art maxxing.
anyways it is my favorite thing to do in the city and it is free. there’s 3 main clusters - Chelsea, Tribeca, Upper East Side.
for newcomers I’d recommend Chelsea (in the 20s btwn 10th annd 11th ave) and pairing it with the high line (or maybe the Whitney for a full art day!). Galleries are usually open Tues-Sat, 11/12ish to 5-6ish so it’s a great afternoon activity that can flex to however much time you have to spare. Often on Thursday evenings they have opening receptions too.
It’s a great repeat activity too given the exhibitions change every 1-2months. You can definitely just go to the neighborhood and pop in and out of whichever galleries were there but I like to actually pre-research what’s showing (SeeSaw is a free app for browsing exhibitions but I am obsessive and made an agent that populates a spreadsheet so that I can more easily browse and track lol). When in doubt start with the big blue chip galleries that usually have bigger names (ie Pace, Hauser & Wirth, Zwirner) but I love the smaller galleries that often have smaller more diverse artists. Linking a list that I made of current exhibitions - a lot will be closing by November but I’ll be making a part 2 list in a few weeks. happy hopping!
