Staying at this apartment in Shin-Okubo: Not a hotel, but I adored this Airbnb in Shin-Okubo. The picture-perfect little postage stamp of an apartment, with every amenity you might need. Plus, the neighborhood is really nice and has a ton of low-key Tokyo character, while still being extremely central.

(I actually spent a ludicrous amount of time looking at Google streetview for various hotels and Airbnbs, and this was exactly what I was looking for - essentially, a vibe akin to this NHK doc about a shrine beneath a massive tree in a residential Tokyo neighborhood. The apartment managed to live up to my own inordinately high hopes.)

JR Kyushu Blossom Hotel Shinjuku: Stayed here on my most recent trip (Jan 2026)- a totally solid budget business hotel option near Shinjuku station. Tiny rooms to be expected, but clean, well-run, ultra-quiet rooms, easy location (about 5 min walk to station), etc.
