Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin, 1936)

City Lights notwithstanding, this is my favorite Chaplin, and one of my all-time favorite movies period. The Tramp tries to survive various jobs in the Great Depression and takes up with an orphaned street urchin. The feeding machine alone kills me every time, and there are so many other terrifically funny scenes.

Whether you’re watching “My Dinner with Andre”, or just watching the rain fall outside your window, this songs provides something that not very song can: atmosphere. Let yourself feel what Brazilians call saudades, or perhaps what The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrow calls “sonder”.

Tenacious use of free software showcasing the power of cross-species friendship during the apocalypse. No dialogue, but I cried the entire time. Gratuitous use of Secretary Bird.

Jacques Tati in general, really! Functionally wordless and all the more beautiful for it.
