Distressed Malls

This one is time sensitive. Dead malls are boring and dangerous, and thriving malls are just malls, but a distressed mall, that is sick enough to act as host to whimsical local businesses and moonshots and not quite sick enough to be an abandoned hulk, is a gol-durn delight.
Act quickly, “distressed mall” is not a stable state. Your distressed mall is on its way to being bulldozed (best outcome) or going full JOHN DIES AT THE END. It’s not coming back. Go to that weird candle store while you still can.

Yes! One of my favorite distressed malls in Chicago seems like a hardy perennial at this point bc it houses the landmark century centre cinema (the reason to go). Something like axe throwing is there, soon to be replaced by laser tag etc. It’s great.

The mall in my hometown is exactly like this. JC penny has turned into a shop rite, they rent out some old failed stores for meetings and churches BUT somehow bath and body works, a thriving AMC and Spencer’s have gone untouched. It’s fascinating but also a little sad to rmemeber the mall glory days. I miss Orange Julius so bad.

Just went to a mall in San Antonio that had a year-round Halloween store, a place where you could play with RC cars, a bodega, a weekend toy market in the thru ways, a Catholic shrine/charity, the DMV, and and two Lens Crafters. Wild!
