Any good books about video games? I've enjoyed the stuff from Boss Fight Books, but I'm looking more for books about video games writ large -- broader history or culture.

Question

Jess · Answer

Watch Me Play (T. L. Taylor): Taylor is a game sociologist who writes some of the sharpest cultural analysis out there. Consistently ahead of the curve.

Jess · Answer

Game Wizards (Jon Peterson): Peterson writes immaculately researched histories about Dungeons & Dragons and role-playing more broadly. Playing at the World is magisterial, but I think this book is a more accessible place to start.

Karen Fischer · Answer

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow: This is all about video games!

Steve M · Answer

Blood, Sweat, and Pixels (Jason Shreier): Here's a look at modern game development around some of the biggest games of the 2010s. I also recommend his follow up, Press Reset: Ruin and Recovery in the Video Game Industry which covers the cost of these studios and how some of the biggest names were run into the ground.
