The Safekeep (Yael van der Wouden)

Let me add my voice to the chorus of people recommending this book. A beautiful slow burn. The less said in advance about the plot the better. I read it in about three sittings over the weekend.

Just reading this now for my book club. I complained when I was only part way thru that it was slow and nothing was happening. Anna said, "Don't worry, something's gonna happen!" and boy was she right.

“I’ve read (and forgotten) a lot of books in the past few years, but this one SHOOK me in a way I cannot explain. Don’t look up any synopsis or background info, just dive in blind and be patient. I swear the payoff goes crazy.”

“Just thinking about this book makes me want to go back and read it again. Sometimes a story creeps up on you slowly, thoughtfully, carefully, and then proceeds to crush you and break your heart. And you’re grateful for it. This is one of those.”

“Best book I read in 2026. Moved me in a way I almost cannot put into words. I love being gay.”
