I love this magazine from the group behind Monocole (also a great print magazine). It's fashion, art, design, music, and food with a European slant. It's the kind of magazine that I need to flip through with my phone nearby so I can look up all of the recommendations that are unique to the magazine.

Do you wish you had a magazine version of This Old House, with DIYs that are maybe a little out of your depth but fun to read about? Very good Midwest dad energy here. My sister is also the Art Director :) available on Libby!

READING
ELLE
•••
I've been buying a magazine every time I fly since I also missed physically reading them. I have two copies of ELLE and really enjoyed both issues - great writing, good mix of fashion and profiles, a thoughtful political piece, etc. Vogue is great for all of the ads. I found Vanity Fair a bit thin, with an egregious typo in my issue ("Stephen" Spielberg, not "Steven").

Nothing delights me more than receiving a physical zine from a guest contributor every month in the mail on really any topic you could imagine: the stories of grandmotherly heirlooms, movies by Almodovar, Hispanic candies, poetry about an apartment, and a dating simulation. Also, my sister runs this. She includes a newsletter with movie reviews and a list of her joys from the month. I've saved all of her newsletters in a binder. I love her and I love zine-a-month.

This is a literary magazine that's been around since the 1970s that always has such a specific emotional impact whenever I read it. I will say AT TIMES it is a little bit "your older hippie uncle who is organizing the protest" - in a good way but maybe also sometimes in a way that maybe hits some cliches - but it's a magazine that's regularly made me laugh, cry, think, or consider a new idea. They have a "Readers Write" section where every month there's a new 1-word prompt and people write in personal stories; those are always really moving and unexpected. My best friend subscribed me to it when we were really young, and I kept it for many, many years (and at one point even joined a reading club to discuss it).

Honestly a great magazine - not only are the pictures beautiful and the recipes always great/inspiring, they do really interesting articles (farms using kelp instead of grass to feed cows, to offset methane gas; spotlights on women/POC-led cheesemaking). I used to save each issue to read as a special little treat.

Really, really beautiful nature/science/life writing. “It is difficult to compare the shapes of trees with almost anything else. A flag flutters in the wind, and I can sense the longing of my mind to compare the character of that movement with those of leaves annotating the wind. But the flag mast is not a tree branch and no leaf moves like a flag, not even the banana leaf, whose behavior I’ve often mistaken for a Buddhist prayer flag. Sometimes when I watch leaves being tickled by the wind, I look at the tree nervously. It reminds me of a parent throwing their child up to the sky and catching her again, carrying her in so many ways, with risk as much as assurance. In this is a knowledge system of trust, how the branches hold the leaves and allow them to move without fear.”

CREEM
•••
America's only rock'n'roll magazine. Creem is for the heads, old and young. Covering all things music from local dives to arena acts and the underworld beneath it all. It's sassy, snarky, and unapologetic, but don't be fooled by their casual pseudo-apathy. This magazine is a sincere 144-page love letter to music delivered quarterly. It's got everything: poignant writing, dope pictures, cool art. The range and depth of pieces is impressive. I love the dialogue it creates between the music of today with that of the past.
