David Whyte's 2016 OnBeing Interview

I nearly have this interview memorized word-for-word (I wish I could replicate his accent). I am not overstating the impact when I say that this conversation changed the course of my life. The permission, freedom, and invitation infused into David Whyte's poetry and philosophy woke me tf up inside of my own [probably dissociated] way of moving through the world nearly ten years ago. I'd made myself small. I'd been afraid of my own earnestness and wonder. I'd stepped into the shell of Chill Girl in order to avoid being Cringe Girl (Fun Fact: I hate the word cringe and would maybe go as far as to say I was traumatized by it.) I still quote this interview regularly — "We have so many allies in this world — like even the color blue in the sky..." — and reference it often to this day. I'll probably turn it on again for my walk this afternoon. Gawd bless you, David Whyte.

I'm late to discovering Whyte and am starting to experience something you're pointing towards... ✨ A quote that stuck with me (from a slightly earlier 2010 recording):
"There's something at the beginning… something very, very important that you must actually oxygenate the soil with, in order to have a really nourishing growth. You get things right at the beginning by creating a spaciousness around your approach.

This spaciousness involves allowing the unknown to be itself — without constantly trying to convert it into names that, at this stage in the process, would be far too small for what was about to occur."

Gah, I have not heard this before, so thank you for sharing it. I decided to re-listen to this interview this morning to try to make notes of quotes and come back to your comment. First: I'm once again in amazement that this conversation can impact me this potently having heard it at least twenty times and for over ten years. There are soooo many moments I'd share here, but I'll share two favorites in the follow-up comments.

(1) This excerpt changed my relationship to grief. I find it to be one of the most beautiful, potent descriptions of the experience: "...we have this physical experience in loss of falling towards something. It's like falling in love, except it's falling into grief. And you're falling towards the foundation that they held for you in your life that you didn't realize they were holding. And you fall and fall and fall, and you don't find it for the longest time. And so the shock of the loss to begin with, and the hermetic sealing off, is necessary in grief. But then there comes a time where you finally, actually start to touch the ground that they were holding for you. And it's from that ground that you step off into your new life.”

(2) This interview was the first time I'd heard "Everything is Waiting for You", and there's no doubt that poem was/is tremendously impactful. But what he says just before he recites it feels like a part of the poem to me and I think about these words all. the. time.: "...we have so many allies in this world, including just the color blue in the sky, which we're not paying attention to, or the breeze or the ground beneath our feet. And so this is an invitation to come out of abstraction and back into the world again.” And from the poem: "To feel abandoned is to deny the intimacy of your surroundings... Put down the weight of your aloneness and ease into the conversation... All the birds and creatures of the world are unutterably themselves. Everything, everything, everything is waiting for you.”

It may have been 10 years ago now: I booked a really cute Airbnb near Mendocino for my partner and I on a little romantic getaway. It was at this amazingly charming A-frame cabin, the host had local coffee and farm fresh eggs on the table for us, and encouraged us to pick blackberries on her property to take home with us. It was the most magical trip. We are both artists and had spent the trip exploring the coast, sketching and writing. As we were leaving we signed the guest book, and realized that David Whyte had stayed there just before us and used the stay as a writing retreat. He spoke of it as the most magical time for him as well. He’s my partner’s favorite living poet. She was so enthralled to have had such a seemingly kismet experience and to see a handwritten thank you note with a bit of original prose tucked in a guest book from a hero of hers.

What an incredible experience! (Also: you painted the scene beautifully. I can feel the trip in the way you described it!Mendocino is on the list of places I want to go in the next year). I have had so many kismet moments with David Whyte and his work but not (to my knowledge) in physical proximity and that is so special. Also reinforces my imagining that Mendocino is one of those "Genius Loci" places.

I love that! My friends in 2016 could attest to my hyperfixation on this interview but I remember On Being releasing something saying it was their most listened to episode of the year and in that moment, I did wonder how many other people could sit and talk for hours about the liberating, healing, illuminating experiences throughout. I felt an immediate sense of community. Feeling that again here, on Rec League. And honestly, it was totally unexpected! Feels like even more evidence of the ripples of impact this conversation had and just how many of us might be connected by way of it. I also love Sweet Darkness and have been comforted by it often. "You must learn one thing: the world was made to be free in."
