Zotero
As a certified Old currently in grad school, I love Zotero for organizing my research (this is a screenshot of what I'm currently working on). You can read and annotate within Zotero, produce citations, and there's a Chrome plugin. The free edition does have a storage limit, but you can export a bibliography of collected articles at any time, so cleaning up is no big deal.

“My preferred research organization method. Read, annotate, and produce citations in one place. Free!!!!! with some storage limits, but you can export the entire bibliography of a collection at any time. Using the browser extension is key.”

“It’s free, it’s open source, and it’s the easiest to use for managing sources & citations. A must-have for all you thesis and journal article writers out there.”
