My dad grew up in wartime Manila and lots of American GIs around during the Pacific Theater. He was first a Vaudeville performer near the old garrison of the walled city, so I’m sure a bit of cultural exchange existed. My grandfather was also a ship engine worker who assisted the US troops at the time!

Fascinating! I looked it up. The guy who invented many of these moves (Frankie Manning), that you see dancing in the film I linked, did indeed serve in the Pacific Theater from 1943-1947 (New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan). He must have taught your dad!
